How To Coexist With Western US Wildlife

Long ago, herds of buffalo roamed the Western Plains. Brown waves of huge animals moved across the land, they ruled the West with grace and power. Hunted with awe and reverence by the Native Peoples, they supplied most of their needs for food, warm clothing and bone materials to make tools and weapons. The planned malevolence of civilization almost ended the existence of these magnificent beasts and that of their hunters as well. Western wildlife has made a significant comeback with assistance from its former competitors and opponents. Today ranchers and government are partners in seeing the benefits of roaming and grazing wildlife.

Instead of pasture predators, ranchers now appreciate deer, mustangs and antelope as wildfire preventing scrap brush removers. Good fencing prevents intrusion from wild grazers and a good cowboy can still ride fence when he must.

Long, lonely rides are characteristic for travel in the West. It’s not even rational to consider fencing the roadway to keep wildlife from crossing to greener food on the other side. Driving at night demands side to side vigilance, looking for the two bright lights that mean a deer or other wild herbivore is ready to cross. Several states have installed solar powered detection stations to warn of animals in the roadway.
